Forbes: Backup Is Feeble Protection Against Ransomware

Protecting data against ransomware requires specialized solutions. The purpose of backup was to have a copy of data that can be recovered. Backup systems offer no protection for data or the computer systems themselves. Malware — like NotPetya, Bad Rabbit and Shamoon — can take over a computer’s boot process, encrypt the computer’s entire disk and erase all data on the driveAn attack by Fully UnDetectable (FUD) ransomware is very hard to detect and next to impossible to clean with traditional security solutions. This is because existing security solutions rely on detection and pre-programmed steps to disinfect and quarantine the malware.

I certainly wouldn’t place my bet on a backup system if a ransomware attack occurs. Depending upon backup as a ransomware protection solution is like using a peashooter against a nuclear attack. Now, without question, backup is always recommended for preserving data in the case of disasters, data corruption or accidental deletions. But backup wasn’t designed to protect against cybercrime.

Exchange Server Patch Alert

Anecdotes From The Pandemic

Working from home during the pandemic is something that many have had to deal with. It has provided a unique situation, especially for small businesses like NeuShield. Since no one has been in the office we added a remote control KVM system, remote power switches for our equipment, as well as a more robust surveillance monitoring solution.

On a lighter note, we have also had to make sure that all the office plants remained healthy. This means we have had at least one person visit the office every week to make sure they’ve been watered. During this time, we also take the opportunity to pick up any mail that had been accumulating.

One of the strangest things to happen so far was the office park’s entire panel of mailboxes were stolen! All the affected tenants had to track down lost mail. This caused a major inconvenience as you can imagine.

Feel free to reply with any interesting or strange stories from the last year that have impacted your business. Hopefully, we are getting close to seeing a light at the end of this tunnel…
