It outlines tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) that happened as recently as November 2023. Scattered Spider is a cybercriminal group that targets large companies and their contracted IT help desks engaged in data theft for extortion and have also been known to utilize BlackCat/ALPHV ransomware alongside their usual TTPs. This advisory comes on the heads of the recent announcement of NeuShield Datacenter Edition with exfiltration protection for databases. In the contemporary era, the traditional 9-5 work week, once popularized by Henry Ford nearly a century ago, is increasingly being questioned. In today’s fast-paced, interconnected world where real-time connectivity is the norm, the 9-5 work week has rapidly become outdated for many individuals. A parallel can be drawn with traditional backup methods. While acknowledging the paramount importance of data, the conventional approach to data backup, dating back to 2005 in Peter Krogh’s 3-2-1 backup plan as outlined in ‘The DAM Book: Digital Asset Management for Photographers,’ is facing similar obsolescence. Despite the 20-year-old 3-2-1 plan’s resilience (3 copies, 2 media types, 1 copy offsite/disconnected), the evolving landscape of data size imposes significant challenges on companies, encompassing time constraints, impact, and unexpected costs. There is no luxury of a nine-month preparation period for a data breach. One might wonder if there is a more efficient alternative. Indeed, there is. Generative AI, like ChatGPT, uses algorithms and data modeling to output new code for tools and apps, and to generate content for emails and other forms of communication. ChatGPT is the most referenced and widely used generative AI today. Other AI generative models include AlphaCode, Anyword, Bard, Cohere Generate, DuetAI, GitHub Copilot, Jasper and more. When it comes to code and content, hackers are already employing AI to create new zero-day ransomware and malware, and to improve the content within their social engineering methods. AI is used to create fraudulent phishing content to get users to click, swipe or tap on nefarious web links, emails and texts. AI helps hackers generate content without typos and grammar errors for phishing emails and web content. Threat actors are beginning to capitalize on generative AI to create new and improved code for more sophisticated malware that is harder for cybersecurity tools to detect.
